Fragrance glossary
Velario’s fragrance glossary explains the terms used in its catalog and separates product descriptions from measured evidence. Each definition includes a real catalog example so you can compare notes, concentration labels, and performance language without treating a scent pyramid as a formula or a test result.
Extrait de parfum
Extrait de parfum describes a concentrated perfume format. The label does not establish a universal percentage or promise a fixed number of wear hours. Velario labels its single fragrances as 35% extrait in 50 ml bottles; concentration and measured performance remain different facts.
Eau de parfum
Eau de parfum, often abbreviated EDP, is a perfume concentration descriptor. Its exact percentage varies between products and brands. It does not identify one universal formula or wear duration. Velario’s catalog uses the extrait label, so EDP comparisons require the reference product’s own specifications.
Eau de toilette
Eau de toilette, abbreviated EDT, is a fragrance format commonly positioned below eau de parfum in concentration. Exact levels vary. Velario’s single fragrances are labeled extrait, but that difference alone cannot predict similarity, projection, longevity, or how either scent will develop on your skin.
Sillage
Sillage is the scent trail left as a fragrance wearer moves through a space. It differs from longevity, which concerns duration, and projection, which concerns detectable distance around the wearer. Velario’s listed notes describe scent character; they do not measure a trail’s strength.
Projection
Projection describes how far a fragrance can be detected around its wearer under particular conditions. It is not the same as how long the scent lasts. Velario publishes scent profiles, but this glossary does not assign measured distances or promise room-filling performance from those descriptions.
Longevity
Longevity is the time a fragrance remains detectable under defined conditions after application. The endpoint matters: a close skin scent can remain after wider projection fades. Velario states 10+ hour wear, but an independent result requires recorded observations, an application method, and test conditions.
Scent pyramid
A scent pyramid organizes a perfume’s described notes into top, heart, and base groups. It is a guide to the intended composition, not a complete ingredient list or exact timetable. Velario’s catalog publishes these three groups so readers can compare the listed scent profiles.
Fixative
A fixative is a material used in perfumery to help a composition persist or develop more slowly. Its role depends on the formula. Velario’s public note lists do not disclose functional ingredient quantities, so they cannot identify which materials perform that role in a bottle.
Aldehyde
An aldehyde is a type of chemical compound; in fragrance descriptions, aldehydic often refers to a recognizable style of scent. Velario Poudre lists aldehydes among its top notes. That description identifies an intended olfactory effect, not the identity or concentration of every ingredient.
Oud
Oud refers to fragrant agarwood material and, in perfume descriptions, the scent character associated with it. An oud note does not establish that natural agarwood oil is present. Velario Nomade lists oud wood in its heart notes without disclosing a natural-oud content percentage.
Ambroxan
Ambroxan is a perfumery material associated with an ambergris-like odor profile. It also appears as a note label in fragrance descriptions. Velario lists it in several compositions, including Imagine; the public note list does not reveal its quantity or independently establish how the fragrance performs.
Base note
A base note is part of the lasting foundation described in a fragrance’s scent pyramid. It helps characterize the later impression of the perfume. Velario’s base-note lists provide a comparison vocabulary, but they do not specify a fixed duration or a complete ingredient formula.
Dry down
Dry down is the later impression of a fragrance after its initial application develops. It describes an experience over time, not a fixed minute shared by every perfume. Velario’s base-note lists suggest that later character, while individual wear observations are needed to describe actual development.
Macerate
In fragrance discussion, macerate commonly describes allowing a perfume mixture to rest as part of its preparation or development. Consumer usage varies. Velario’s public product notes do not document batch resting times, and this glossary does not promise that storing a purchased bottle will improve it.
Batch variation
Batch variation means differences observed between production batches of a product. It must be distinguished from storage effects, different editions, and individual perception. Velario’s public note lists do not contain a batch comparison study, so they cannot establish whether a particular bottle differs from another.
Clone vs dupe vs inspired-by
Clone, dupe, and inspired-by are descriptive terms used for fragrances compared with another scent. They do not establish identical formulas, performance, ownership, or endorsement. Velario identifies its scent inspirations while remaining an independent brand; compare the exact products and evaluate their differences instead of assuming equivalence.
