What is sillage?

Sillage is the scent trail left as a fragrance wearer moves through a space. It differs from longevity, which concerns duration, and projection, which concerns detectable distance around the wearer. Velario’s listed notes describe scent character; they do not measure a trail’s strength.

How should you use this term when comparing fragrances?

A trail depends on how a fragrance behaves in its setting. To compare it fairly, keep application and conditions consistent and use another observer. Do not infer a numerical sillage score from a note pyramid.

What distinction matters?

A trail behind a moving wearer is different from a stationary distance measurement.
